Dream Dream....

I get to go to a new office pretty much every week in my job. And when the work gets a tad dry, which it always does, my team and I end up bitching about our work and how much we'd rather work at the particular client we're at. Most of the time, you see the goods and the bads: the yoghurt company with all-you-can-eat yoghurt but the too-busy-for-you manager; the big corporates with 9-5s but having to work with people who know nothing beyond cutting and pasting between Excel spreadsheets; the feel-good work charities with boring work... In little over a year of work, I think I've seen it all... or at least most of it.

Earlier on in the year, I was working on a Govt. agency and everyone was really helpful. People would stay behind after 5 to explain something to you. And they'd pull out the whiteboard and draw diagrams of the processes. It felt like you could rock up to anyone at the client and they were free to chat for a while. The majority of people looked like they were actually happy to be at work, which, in my infinite wisdom, is extremely rare, public sector or private. Also the coffee machine was great and the location was the perfect distance away from my favourite sushi place, salad bar and cookie shop. All of which convinced me that it would be the one place that I would like to work in when I eventually leave my first real job.

However, this week I have decided on a replacement. The client I'm on is a little further away from my favourite places to eat, which may actually be an upside. But I think I'm willing to let that slide for the perks: the arcade games in the kitchen, the primo make-your-own-espresso coffee machine, the pool table (which may be helpful if I ever decide to become a pool shark), the free chocolate cake and all-week casual Friday. And people are uber-friendly. You can't bump into someone in the kitchen, ladies room or wait for the lift without talking to someone from the client. And they're very efficient but no one works past 5.30. So when I hand in my resignation, I might head over and beg the client to take me on.

That's it for now.
